Mama used to come to my house.
This bag, inside, she’d lug…
She’d set it by the door,
And start to give the kids their hugs.
Cancer moved it to the closet –
Stored away for rainy days –
The shadow shocks arrive,
Feeling somewhat sad and dazed.
Maybe I’ll look inside –
Memories of her to be found there?
Or will that make things worse?
Don’t know if I should dare.
I smell her mama smell –
But these are just some robes…..
Deeper, digging, hoping –
I continue to search and probe.
Out comes light and beauty,
My mama’s pretty face –
Hidden down deep inside,
Of a dark corner; it’s own space.
Is this a magic bag?
One like Mary Poppins’?
Will I keep on finding things?
Is that the way these things, they happen?
Nope. This isn’t magic.
No special tricks in here…
God sends me a special message –
That He wants for me to hear.
So back to the closet it goes.
But I think it needs more light.
I’ll make it nicer in here –
I’ll make it a bit more bright.
Mama used to come to my house.
This bag, she’d always bring –
But she’s still here and with us….
In our hearts, she hums and sings.
Revelation 21:4 “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Is there someone you love who has gone home to be with the Lord who used to come and visit you at your house? Please feel free to share your story below in the comments!
Good one! Dang those photos are great too. Mom sitting on the patio in Peru with you. I’m surprised she wasn’t wearing her penny loafers. Ha ha ha!
Thanks Bro…..that bag of hers in our office catches my eye every time I go in there! I am so glad you liked it and the photos too…I agree….penny loafers or barefoot, that’s the name of the game!
Your poem is so sweet! It touched my heart. I thank God for giving you your mother who touched your heart so deeply and inspired you to write these beautiful words about her. In everything, praise the Lord. Thank you for doing God’s will : )

“…God saw her getting tired, a cure not meant to be, so He put His arms around her and whispered… ‘Come with Me’.”
I loved your poem. It really expresses the feelings we get from the reminders of them. My Mom went to be with the Lord in 2008. I still miss her & wish I could pick up the phone & talk to her. It will soon be two years since my husband went home to be with the Lord, so the grief is still fresh. My children are very caring & that helps. The Lord is ever present!
Aaah…dear sister! I promise to be in prayer for you – I hear your grief, yet also that you take comfort in the Lord…He heals us, doesn’t He? I am so thankful your children are such blessings….may Jesus be with you in all the ups and downs and all of it! Annie B 🙂
Thank you for your prayers for me. Yes, the Lord does heal & I find great comfort in His Word. Journaling has been very helpful in sorting out my thoughts and feelings. I can see where He has not left me alone, He’s there.
YES! He is always there….and so are we, the other believers and your brothers and sisters in HIM! Keep journaling, writing, and sharing! 🙂
Thanks for the encouragement.
That was very sweet in remembrance of your mother. God Bless . . .
I miss her but know she is in great hands! Annie 🙂
I really liked the poem. Your mother is in better hands than any of us can know. It is easy to grieve when we loose someone but maybe we should celebrate a little. You couldn’t ask for a better place for her honestly. I’m sorry if I sound mean or something, that tends to happen with me, that’s just what I think. I have never lost someone only pushed them away which is VERY different. It’s like self inflicted pain. UGH! Anyway, lovely poem! Blessed be. Merry meet merry part and merry meet again.
Oh yes! I fully agree…thank you. I absolutely am so very thankful that she has stepped into the arms of her Savior! The grief still comes and goes, but just out of missing her here. I am glad she is with Him for all eternity, and cannot wait to see her again – but mostly, I cannot wait to see HIM!

I’ve got a bottle of my Mom’s favorite perfume. Since moving I haven’t seen it in a while. Need to break it out.
Definitely! Do it!!!! Blessings to you – Annie 🙂

Hugs to you too, sweet lady! I think we shall always miss them – May the Lord wrap His arms around you the way Momma and Daddy did and would if they were here with you in body. They WILL always be in our hearts! Annie 🙂
What a lovely tribute to your loving mother.
Thank you – I appreciate you sharing and reading it – she was and still is such a blessing – I am so glad she is with Jesus now even when I miss here so much at times. Annie 🙂
Please pray for Shannon and Jaclyn who lost their mother just last Tuesday and are beginning their grief journey. Thank you.
Oh, my Lord – I promise to pray – He knows and can comfort them, but it is so helpful for us to lift one another up in prayer…please let them know I am praying. Thank you for sharing this with me so I can be a part of bringing their sorrow to the Lord. Blessings to you. Annie
